THE SECRET TO CANADA’S FUTURE –

December 7, 2009

South Korea – Canada must look to the East for economic opportunities because its traditional trading partners, the U.S. and Europe, will be mired in slow growth for some time, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Monday as he wrapped up his visit to South Korea.

Harper said Asia is becoming the world’s economic engine and Canada has the natural resources the region needs to fuel its economies.

“We have every reason to believe that the markets in the United States and Europe … will probably experience continued slower growth for some time to come,” Harper said.

“So the great opportunity is obviously in the Asia-Pacific region.”

HST APPROVED FOR BC AND ONTARIO

December 3, 2009

OTTAWA – The House of Commons has voted in favour of a harmonized sales tax for Ontario and British Columbia.

MPs passed a ways-and-means motion today amending the Excise Tax Act to implement the controversial tax, which combines the GST and provincial sales tax.

The Conservatives, Liberals and Bloc Quebecois supported the motion, which passed 192-32, while the NDP opposed it.

Quite a few MPs were absent for the vote.

Many fear a backlash from voters, who are becoming increasingly angry about the prospect of paying more for a host of goods and services.

The Ontario and Quebec governments support the tax.

Several other provinces have already moved to an HST.
